The Types
The credit crunch seems to have left credit cards relatively unscathed and in fact Barclays who run First Plus pulled out of secured loans to concentrate on credit cards for their main consumer credit income.
The choices out there are huge so here's a quick rundown of the different types:
Pre-Pay Cards
These are an option of last resort for people who've got such bad credit they can't get one of the bad credit cards below. These work by you topping them up to use them. Meaning you can never go into the red but on your credit report it will look like you're a perfect credit cusotmer by showing you paying off your card regularly. These are perfect to build you rating back up.
Bad Credit
If you got a bad credit rating with maybe some past defaults or missed payments then a high interest bad credit card could be the answer. The choices are few in this bracket but they act as a great stepping stone to the better credit options below. Vanquis and Capital One are the two biggest players in this market. I'd personally reocmmend Capital One for their free extras.
Good Credit
These are your platinum and gold cards and will often have a wide range of extra features such as cashback, air miles, long interest free periods, discounts, and specialist items.
